How Image Compression Works

Our image compressor uses your browser's built-in Canvas API to re-encode images at optimized settings. For JPEG and WebP, lossy compression reduces file size by discarding color detail that's barely visible to the human eye. You can target a specific file size (like 100KB for email) or set a compression percentage.

Batch compress multiple images at once, download individually or as a ZIP. EXIF metadata is stripped by default for privacy. Everything runs locally in your browser — your images are never uploaded to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I compress my images?

You can reduce image file size by up to 90% depending on the original quality and format. JPEG images typically compress well to 60-80% smaller, while PNG files with transparency see 30-50% reduction. Use the quality slider to find the best balance between file size and visual quality.

Does compression reduce image quality?

Our tool uses lossy compression which slightly reduces quality to achieve smaller file sizes. At quality settings above 70%, the difference is virtually imperceptible to the human eye. For lossless compression without any quality loss, try our Lossless Compress tool.

What image formats can I compress?

You can compress JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF images. Each format uses optimized compression algorithms. JPEG uses DCT-based compression, PNG uses DEFLATE, and WebP uses advanced predictive coding for superior compression ratios.

Is there a file size limit?

You can upload images up to 50MB each. However, for best browser performance, we recommend images under 20MB. For batch processing multiple images, use our Bulk Compress tool which handles multiple files simultaneously.

Are my images uploaded to any server?

No. All compression happens directly in your browser using JavaScript and Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, making this tool completely private and safe for sensitive or confidential images.
